Assignment:

Create a spectate-'able' game.

Has to include a digital component

Playtime has to be either infinite or <2 min.

2 players

Idea

This is based on the classic game of Beerpong with a digital component in the form of a custom timer known from chess. The players will be placed side by side.

The game field consists of a cup in one end of a table or in a distance on the floor. An unlimited amount of table tennis balls are provided.

The timer is shown on a screen which is visible for everyone, including both players.

The timer is divided into two timers of 60 seconds each. Only one timer will be going down at a time. When the button is pushed the timer counting down will change.

For each player to get to hit the button they have to hit the cup with a table tennis ball.

The player which timer reaches 0 first loses the game.

- You can download the custom timer under here! It is made to fit any pc and you can use any button on the keyboard! -

The code for the timer. Right now it is clean code for processing.

Thoughts

To make this game spectator-‘able’ the play field consists of a centeret open area with a huge info screen - visible to everyone.

That along side the actions, behaviours, choices and speed of the players makes it spectator-‘able’

The game is mostly skill based over time (Agõn) but with lower levels of players kill it could include chance (Alea).

If drinking were included the game would also include vertigo (Ilinx).

A simple set of rules is applied from the beginning suggesting a Ludus - but the crowd can apply small strategies, shout or encourage the players.

Might be aiming more from Ludus to Paidia.

MDA:

M: The ball, cups, play field and button. Sizes, colours and locations.

D: Fast paced gameplay and a mix of breaks and action and focus and reflexes

A: The game aims to create the feelings of excitement and stress

Modifications:

There might be suggested a further strategic game element to strengthen the playability and making it more spectator-‘able’. Through another element the spectators could fit in.

Also according to Caillois it could further flexible skill based choices in a constantly changing game environment.

The digital component could have included the cup for automatic shift when a ball hits.
